Many people arrive in Spain — or plan a transaction there — without realising they need an NIE number. This guide explains exactly what it is and why you cannot do without one.
What is an NIE Number?
An NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a unique identification number issued to all foreign nationals by the Spanish authorities. Think of it as your personal reference number for everything official in Spain.
What You Cannot Do Without an NIE
Without an NIE number you cannot:
- Buy or sell property in Spain
- Open a Spanish bank account
- Sign any legal contract
- Start work or register as self-employed (autónomo)
- Pay Spanish taxes
- Buy or register a vehicle
- Apply for residency
- Inherit property or assets in Spain
When Should You Apply?
As early as possible. NIE applications take time, and many transactions — particularly property purchases — cannot proceed without one. Do not wait until you are days away from a deadline.
